Short summary of First Session, August 7, 2024

The book study of The Heart at the Heart of the World: Re-visioning the Sacred Heart for the Ecozoic Era- by Mary Frohlich, RSCJ held its first session on Aug 7, 2024. Sixty registrants signed up from all segments of the Sacred Heart Family, including Friends of the Sacred Heart family!

Associate Molly Arthur was host and Associate Ray O’Connor, who taught at Sacred Heart schools in San Francisco for 19 years, interviewed Mary on the the beginning segments of the book. For almost 40 minutes they discussed questions that Ray formed, firstly based on Mary’s writing:  “I want to put words not only on my experience but on what it revealed, that an infinite depth of love and life permeates all creation”.  Further questions were: What narratives are we living now-restitution, chaos or quest (becoming fully who you are)? What is “normal” for humanity facing the environmental crisis?

And Mary touched on “ The core realization, that what we have lost is .. to be a participant in Earth life.. in the Earth Community” and she supports a new kind of Christian Animism- not going backwards but rediscovering  living within the community of life now. She looks forward to younger theologians developing our understanding of humanity and creation in the Ecozoic Era, with reference to Teilhard de Chardin’s foundational work.

Participants talked in small groups  and participated in groundings and expression of their hearts’ feelings.

There are three more sessions on Aug 28, Sept 18 and Oct 9. Below is a video of the first session:
